SMTCCAC, Inc. operates the federally funded Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) in Calvert, Charles and St. Mary’s County.
The Weatherization Assistance Program helps households to reduce their home energy consumption and make energy costs more affordable.
The program provides free home energy conservation services to low-income Maryland homeowners and renters. These services reduce energy use and lower utility bills, thus creating more self-sufficient households.
Owner applicants must be income eligible, currently 60% of statewide median, and be able to prove ownership of the home. Landlords of renter applicants must prove ownership, agree to participate and contribute 25% of expenses. Priority is given to homeowners who are elderly, disabled, have families with children and/or have the highest energy consumption.
Once eligibility is determined, program staff will schedule a home energy audit inspection. If the existing condition of the home permits, the program may provide the following to increase energy efficiency:

- add insulation to the attic, walls, and/or floors
- caulk and seal leaks
- water system improvements
- lighting retrofit, installation of compact fluorescent bulbs
- furnace clean/tune, safety repairs, burner retrofit or replacement
- health and safety items
